How the Argentine Primera works

Two zones of 15

30 clubs are drawn into two zones of 15. Each zone is a single round-robin (plus two inter-zone matches), so a club plays 16 games in the group stage.

The championship playoff

The top 8 of EACH zone advance to a single-leg knockout — round of 16, quarter-finals, semi-finals, final — that crowns the torneo champion. There are two torneos a year: Apertura and Clausura.

Promedios & the annual table

Relegation is by promedios (a three-year points average) and continental places by the aggregate annual table — separate tables from the zone standings, so a club's zone rank decides neither.
